To apply for a license, you must go to the nearest DMV and submit the requirements and pay the fee. There are three types of driver’s license that you can get. Each has its criteria you must meet to qualify. You can apply for a commercial, chauffeur, or a non-commercial driver’s license.
Basic License Requirements
To apply for any type of driver’s license, you must first meet the requirements. The basic requirements include:
- Completed application
- Proof of identity
- Proof of residency (in the state you are applying)
- Pass a written test
- Pass a road test
- Pay the cost
Applying for a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
When you apply for a commercial driver’s license or a CDL, you must:
- Have a valid non-commercial driver’s license
- Be at least 18 years old (in most states)
- Be at least 21 years old:
- To drive a commercial vehicle across state lines
- To drive a commercial vehicle with hazardous materials
- Have at least two years driving experience
- Pass all background screenings
- Provide names of all states you previously had a driver’s license
- Have no active driver’s license suspensions or revocation in any state
- Be able to speak and read English
Applying for Chauffeur Driver’s License
To apply for a chauffeur’s license, most states require you:
- Complete a CDL application (if applying for the first time)
- Have a driver’s license in one of these classes:
- Class A (CDL)
- Class B CDL
- Class C CDL
- Class E driver’s license
- To be 18 years or older
Applying for a Non-commercial Driver’s License
To apply for a driver’s license, you must provide:
- Social Security Card
- Identification (photo ID, passport)
- Proof of state residency (copy of your lease, utility bills, mortgage statement)
- Proof of citizenship (birth certificate, passport, naturalization certificate)
How to Apply for a Driver’s License
Once you have all the requirements, get an appointment at the DMV near me. You must provide all the papers and fee at the time of your appointment. Also, you must pass the written and road test for the type of license you will apply for. If you are renewing your license, a written and road test may not be necessary.
After completing the requirements and passing, you may be given a temporary card to drive. Most cards are sent by two weeks. If after two weeks and you haven’t received your license, contact the DMV about it.
First-time Applicants
If you have a learner’s permit or a provisional license, you can submit it as proof of identity. Most states require you to be at least 18 years to apply for a license. Once you are 18, have either a permit or provisional license, you can upgrade to a standard license. If the state you reside requires you to take the written test and pass, then you should comply.
